United States Treasury Bills mature in one year or less and are issued at a reduction of face value. Once they mature, the investor is paid the full face value of the bill. The minimum value of a US treasury bill is usually $10,000.

An added benefit of U.S. treasury bills is that the interest earned may be exempt from state and municipal tax, but not federal tax.
