Each year, 96% of Northwestern Mutual's policyowners keep their policies in force. We are proud to have one of the highest persistency rates in the industry. What better measure of whether we are doing the right thing for policyowners than the number that are still with us after 50 or more years? In that spirit, Northwestern Mutual sends out about 10,000 congratulatory anniversary letters each year to people who have kept their life insurance inforce for more than 50 years. Once in awhile, they send back a note. Here are some excerpts from those notes:

 I bought my first policy because my track coach was able to explain to me what life insurance was and how it worked. Even then I could see how, later in life, a cash value build up on that policy would be beneficial. It's been a great product, I've never had to use it, and I hope I never will. The proceeds will probably be passed on to my grandchildren so that they can use it for college, which is going to be essential with the cost of college these days.

 My grandmother bought a Northwestern Mutual policy for me when I was 11 years old. My parents continued the payments, and it was turned over to me when I got married. I continued the premiums until it was paid up. For the last 30 years, 10 days after my birthday, I get another birthday present of sorts — a paid up life insurance policy that has increased in value over the year.
I intend to live to age 95. At which time I expect to have lived a good life and exhausted all of my funds, save my insurance policies. My Northwestern Mutual policy is to be used to throw the grandest party ever — after all, it was bought to cover my funeral expenses. Susan Litka

Words of Appreciation My dad's brother had been killed in a tractor accident. Although his Northwestern Mutual insurance premium was overdue, the company paid the claim. Dad was so impressed that he took out a policy for himself. .. I borrowed against my own policy when we went into business for ourselves — paid you back. Finished the premiums and every year I get a letter saying how much the death benefit has increased... You really should advertise more and let people know about you.
