Investment Strategy:

The investment objective of the Balanced Portfolio is to realize as high a level of long-term total rate of return as is consistent with prudent investment risk. Total rate of return consists of current income, including dividends, interest and discount accruals, and capital appreciation.

The assets of the Balanced Portfolio will be invested in the following three market sectors:

  1. Common stock and other equity securities including the securities in which the Index 500 Stock Portfolio invests.
  2. Bonds and other debt securities with maturities generally exceeding one year including the securities in which the Select Bond Portfolio invests.
  3. Money market instruments and other debt securities with maturities generally not exceeding one year including the securities in which the Money Market Portfolio invests.

The Balanced Portfolio seeks to achieve its investment objectives by continuously adjusting the mix of investments among the three market sectors. The manager attempts to capitalize on variation in return potential produced by the interaction of changing financial markets and economic conditions. Asset allocation decisions are based on fundamental analysis rather than short-term market timing considerations. Shifts in asset allocation are expected to be gradual.

Portfolio Managers:

The Balanced Portfolio is managed by a team of six Mason Street Advisors' portfolio managers. The two lead portfolio managers are David R. Keuler, CFA and R. David Ells, CFA.
