Variable Joint Life

Offered through The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company

Variable Joint Life is a flexible premium, variable universal joint life policy. It allows you to choose from 24 investment divisions when investing your net premium and cash values. The divisions are of varying risk levels.

Favorable investment results can increase the policy's cash value. However, there is no guarantee of performance results. Therefore neither the death benefit nor the cash value is guaranteed. Premiums may be paid at any time up to the policy anniversary nearest to the 95th birthday of the younger insured.

Variable Joint Life offers a life insurance policy with potential for greater cash value and death benefit than traditional life insurance. And it can be a great tool in estate planning to free your heirs from significant tax burdens.

Choices for Premium Allocation

Twenty-four investment choices are available to you. Eighteen are from the Northwestern Mutual Series Fund, Inc., one is from the Fidelity VIP Portfolio and five are from the Russell Insurance Funds. Each comes with its own degree of risk.

Investment Division Features

You can transfer assets among the investment divisions up to 12 times in a policy year with no charge and without any income tax ramifications.

You can also use dollar cost averaging to direct money into the investment division(s) of your choice on a regular basis. Dollar cost averaging transfers do not count toward the 12 free transfers per policy year and there is no charge for this feature. Dollar cost averaging does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market. Carefully consider your willingness to continue payments during periods of low prices.

Death Benefit

The specified amount of the death benefit is chosen by the policyowner at issue. The minimum amount is $1 million if the older insured is age 20-49 and $500,000 if the older insured is age 50-85. Three death benefit options are available, none of which are guaranteed due to the variable nature of invested premiums. For details on the differences between the types of benefits, contact a Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Representative.

Policy Loans

You may borrow from the cash value of your Variable Joint Life policy. Loans may be taken at a fixed 5% interest rate. The amount borrowed will not participate in market experience while the loan is outstanding.

The amount available for loan may be more or less than the total premiums paid. The amount of any outstanding policy indebtedness will reduce the death benefit paid.

Policy Withdrawals

You may withdraw money from the policy if it has sufficient cash value. Up to four withdrawals are permitted each year and a fee may be charged. The amount available for withdrawal may be more or less than the total premiums paid. Withdrawals will reduce the policy's cash value and death benefit.

Nonforfeiture Options

The policy does not require that premiums be paid. On a monthly basis, the policy charges will be deducted from the cash value. If there are insufficient funds to pay for the month's expenses, you may make a premium payment to cover the deficiency. Otherwise your policy will lapse.

You should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, expenses and charges of the investment company before you invest. Your Northwestern Mutual Investment Services Registered Representative can provide you with a contract and fund prospectus that will contain the information noted above, and other important information that you should read carefully before you invest or send money.
