Numerous resources, many of which are offered online, provide a wealth of information to a parent or guardian of a child with special needs. Some online resources include: - Social Security Online
The Social Security Administration's Web site provides information every parent should know about Social Security in general and specifically outlines the various benefits available for children with special needs. www.ssa.gov (Under the section "Information for" click on "kids.")
Another page, Benefits for Children with Disabilities, provides other useful information.
- Disabilityinfo.gov
This site provides access to disability-related information and programs available throughout the government on numerous subjects, including civil rights, community life, education, employment, housing, health, benefits, technology and transportation. www.disability.gov
- Kidssource.com
This third party site offers a broad range of information on parenting, including a section where you can find detailed information about getting a child with learning disabilities ready for college and managing the admissions process. It is a good idea to verify any information found here with your local school guidance counselors. www.kidsource.com/Heath/gr.html#Transition
- Special Needs Resources
Many national and regional organizations can provide more information on planning for the financial future and related issues of those with special needs.
