Client History Interview and Inspection Report

In certain cases, we will use the Client History Interview and Inspection Report to collect additional information.

Client History Interview

A CHI is a telephone interview conducted by a Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company home office representative.

During a Client History Interview (CHI), which typically lasts 10-15 minutes, the interviewer will confirm your name and date of birth, and ask general questions about your medical history, employment, income, driving record and current or past use of nicotine and cocaine.

We will contact you using an automated phone system. If you have time to conduct the interview, you will be connected to an available interviewer. If you are unavailable when we call, the automated phone system will leave a message for you to call us back using the toll free phone number.

A Client History Interview is a very common requirement of the evaluation process.

Inspection Report

An Inspection Report (IR) is conducted and prepared by an inspection company contracted by Northwestern Mutual. Depending upon the amount of insurance applied for, you will be asked to participate in either a telephone (10 minutes) or face-to-face (25 minutes) interview.

The interviewer will ask questions about your health; occupation; use of tobacco, cocaine or alcohol; participation in activities such as flying, racing and diving; participation in sports and hobbies; and driving record.

In addition to interviewing you, Northwestern Mutual may ask that you provide three additional references—one from your employer to confirm your employment status and salary, and two personal or business contacts who have known you at least two years.

An Inspection Report is required in special circumstances—generally when applying for large amounts of insurance—and much less frequently than a Client History Interview.
